Dateline: Richmond!

I've been travelling so much I feel like I need to say where I am talking about. Still didn't finish posting my Upstate NY stuff or the Richmond stuff before that, and then I went to Miami. Here is some CURRENT Richmond.

Oura Sananikone and Travis Robertson have curated a show of plush art at Nonesuch. Oura is the painter whose work I (thought) I had first seen at Gallery 5... but I've since discovered that he's the one who made the magnets I bought at Chop Suey's Bizarre Market. I was writing about his paintings and didn't know I already had his work on my refrigerator! Now I know that Oura makes all kinds of things, including dolls and "soft art".

This show is a lot of fun, and most of the stuff - especially Oura's - is very cheap. It is a GENRE BUSTER.


Dana Carlson - These five pillows are my favorite works in the show. I sort-of know Dana, but we have never met, and I am so glad to see these LIVE. Here is a shot of the other two.

Below them you can see some of Oura's sock-monkey prints.


This installation by Oura is another favorite.

I tried to get a better photo of it but the dog thought we would play instead. Look at the fear in that doll's eyes! So expressive.

MORE!! Nonesuch is continuing their 8:00pm Wednesday movie nights with animated fantasies all through December. This Wednesday they will show Karl Zeman's 1961 Baron Prasil and Harry Smith's 1964 Mirror Animations.

Baron Prasil is a precursor to Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Look at this. I didn't know there have been so many Munchausen movies.

Art Basel Miami Beach: adrift

ABMB: the containers, PLUS

Okay, this will be my second to final Art Basel Miami Beach post. I'm very glad I went and saw SO MUCH ART.

At the containers on the beach I especially enjoyed seeing Alexandre Da Cunha and William Daniels at Vilma Gold, Torsten Slama at Galeria Vera Gliem, and Ian Burns at Spencer Brownstone.

Alexandre Da Cunha had two small paintings made from re-worked antique thrift store paintings. The one I am remembering was almost a monochrome, kind of a dark red painted over the original painting, except for a single thin strip of flaking earth-sky tones with a faraway bird. The whole canvas has been loosened from it's stretchers and is drooping over.

William Daniels small painting looks like a collage of torn paper but is in fact all painted. It was *wow*.


Torsten Slama -He had a number of works up, they were all super perfect, landscapes and buildings, like with colored pencil or maybe a very fine brush. This is his container, above. Wish I had better notes or better photos.

Ian Burns made the container into a small funhouse with wood and lights and wooden puppet shadows being projected onto paper screens. Like Flintstones television.

Goudzwaard Kees, also at Zeno X Gallery. This was a good gallery - here are some interesting drawings by someone named Van Kerckhoven Annemie. My photos are not good.

Here is a bad photo of a good Naomi Fisher painting at Frederic Snitzer. I like her photography, then she was involved in that fun Gelatin project in NYC at Leo Koenig recently, and now here is a painting! It was very liquidy, much better in person.


I like this one a lot. Oh wait, this is mine. It's in my apartment.


Barkley Hendricks at Projectile. This is called Family Jules, from 1974. Here is another angle of the Hendricks, here is a Hendricks from 2002.
