Bob Nickas' Painting Abstraction will be published in September '09... I know Chuck Webster, Mike Cloud, Alexander Ross, Lisa Beck, Xylor Jane, David Malek are some of the 80 artists included... who else and who else could have been? Eric Sall and Wendy White are two abstract painters who are enough on the radar now that they might/could be in it. I heard there are a lot of women featured...

Sometimes I am lucky enough to get advance books... most recently I was sent Michael Lobel's new book on James Rosenquist... haven't read it yet but am eager to, especially since the fire. I REALLY WANT A COPY OF PAINTING ABSTRACTION!!!

Martha Cooper, at Ad Hoc Art.

Martha Cooper's Going Postal. Martha Cooper is the photojournalist who published the 1984 book Subway Art... something that I had to reshelve over and over again - and subsequently spent much time looking through - when I worked at a bookstore in the early 90's. Nice interview with Martha in the Village Voice last week.

Michael Lobel's James Rosenquist: Pop Art, Politics, and History in the 1960's. I haven't seen this book yet but I'm sure it will be excellent; Michael is the art historian who curated Fugitive Artist: The Early Work of Richard Prince, 1974-1977... producing a catalogue with blank squares and written descriptions in place of the images Richard Prince refused permission to reproduce. That show was reviewed twice in the NYTimes, by both Roberta Smith and Benjamin Genocchio. Michael also wrote the recommended Image Duplicator: Roy Lichtenstein and the Emergence of Pop Art.

Here is a Richard Prince work from 1971, pre-dating even all of the disavowed stuff from Fugitive Artist.

Human wipe-out dystopia novels... read this year... set in near-future Americas -

Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood - the lushest of the bleak futures
The Road, by Cormac McCarthy - Easy Reader says This Book is Easy to Read
The Genocides, by Thomas Disch - maybe the best but the BLEAKEST...
The Pesthouse, by Jim Crace - i read his books Quarantine and Being Dead and got bored, but this held my interest.

All of these are very good and recommended, but the sudden endings of The Road and Oryx and Crake blow. The Genocides is hard core to the bitter end.

Thomas Disch is a new favorite novelist. I found out about him after he killed himself earlier this year and Eric Gelber and Tom Moody blogged about him. The M.D. was so good. I found some of his stuff in Hoosick at Dog Ear(ed?) Books... next I'm reading The Puppies of Terra.
