nice

.
"So far, the back-and-forth has shed more heat than light. As always in such cases, transparency is the key. How much is the show costing? Who’s paying for it? Are works in the exhibition for sale? Needless to say, museum officials would rather drink cyanide than answer such questions. It would be nice, however, if they were occasionally asked by someone besides Charlie Finch [see 'Transparency at the Whitney?'" - Artnet News

James Kalm asked Massimiliano Gioni at the press preview two weeks ago (at 1:30)... his camera shakes as Gioni's body twists like an asp ready to strike him with a kung-fu chop.

SVA

.
James Kalm has been requested by School of Visual Arts' Communications Director Michael Grant to take down his Dave Hickey SVA lecture videos.

From yesterday's post -

"Dave Hickey on art (from about 8:18) - 'Art doesn't do any of the things that we expect of American creativity... you know what I mean... it just makes a bunch of Jews a bunch of money'. Was that a gaffe or a planned quip? Fuck. I thought the whole talk was a ramble. Oxygen... you know what I mean? Love the SS shadow bolt across the red curtain while he is at the podium smearing the Jews."

Maybe Jerry can have his Glenn Beck show at SVA.

A glimpse (at left) of a huge, exhaustively researched two-canvas work, which is being painted on the last two pieces of the best artist's linen in the world. Loren worked at Utrecht for many years.

JK Fake

JK Fake Myspace

I saw on James Kalm's latest youtube entry (the Rirkrit Tiravanija one) that some jokesters are going to openings impersonating him, and have even set up a Myspace account. That's my photo they used! It's a picture of Steve Kaplan (not James Kalm) giving my painting a double thumbs-up, at the opening for a show I was in at Dumbo Arts Center

I wonder if they are putting their videos on the internet somewhere... they might be funny. Maybe they do the bike thing even.

PLUS:

"Nate Lowman, a pretty downtown totem seemingly welcomed as a royal at New Museum events, hovered outside, collecting his crew. 'Is this necessary?' he huffed petulantly, pointing at the growing crowd of fireman and cops improvising a solution to the three-alarm blaze around the corner..."

misc internet

.
- Google "small abstract paintings"... with or without quotation marks. WOW.

- Roberta Smith wrote about public art last week. Is internet art considered public art? Is graffiti? She didn't mention either of those. My definition of public art is very looooose... I've added a public art label. UPDATE: I've re-read the article and now realize that Smith was writing specifically about public sculpture... it was probably an editor who made the public art headline.

- Tyler Green posted a response.

- anaba archived in the NYTimes!!! FOREVER!

- Major shake-up in my flickr ranking since I last posted the ten most-viewed photos (scroll down). Kjartan Slettemark has unexpectedly leapt into second place after getting more than 1,500 views because it was linked to in this comment thread.

- Read about the work of Kjartan Slettemark here.

- James Kalm was featured in the LATimes! That's cool. This is from April, but I just saw it.

- Speaking of LA, Eric Sall has a show opening next week at Acuna-Hansen.

The Blogger Show, at Agni Gallery

James Kalm has posted a video on The Blogger Show opening... talking to John Morris, Stephanie Lee Jackson, Chris Rywalt, Libby Rosof, Bill Gusky, and Nancy Baker. I also caught glimpses of Roberta Fallon, James Wagner, Barry Hoggard, and Brent Burket.

Agni Gallery is so cute! Nice little space. It's an anaba.

I'll use this space to post updated links to any further Blogger Show references.

UPDATE: Susan Constanse with images from the opening reception. Nice last pic of Bill Gusky, with my piece (with Steven Larose work to the left of it, Warren Craghead work below it).
UPDATE: Chris Rywalt on hanging the show, and on the opening.

Skadden, Arp, Mcfadden, Ayers, Slipek & Kalm

Hey, I got a thumbs-up from starmaker SIMON WATSON... now my career is ready to GO. I will never have to promote myself, after this, again. Simon is giving the thumbs-up to one of my paintings in the Building Picturing show, at The Painting Center.

Okay. I am lying. That is not Simon Watson. That is Ed Slipek. I have never met this Simon Watson person....

James Kalm WENT! Look at his video! Unfortunately, he came and left before I had arrived, so I didn't get to say thanks. James Kalm says on that video that I am one of his first subscribers, but that is wrong. I'm not one of the first, I was the FIRST.

SHOCKER - Building Picturing, the show I'm in (!), is an Art Info pick for Best of New York Summer Shows??? WOW... that is weird! Thanks, Robert Ayers, of Art Info!

James Kalm Youtubes Art... PLUS

Steve Kaplan giving the Thumbs-Up.

Artist and art critic James Kalm has started a youtube site at which he is posting visits to events, exhibitions, and openings... he always opens sounding out of breath, because he rides his bike everywhere; starting out with the bike is great. Here he is at a book-signing party talking to art critics Eleanor Heartney, Joe Fyfe, Deborah Garwood, Liz and Val (artists), Raphael Rubinstein, Carter Ratcliffe, Steve Kaplan, Christopher Chambers, Julia Morton, and Jerry Saltz.

Ion Birch opening. Ion shuts down a bit, Kalm is asking about his schooling... he should keep it light at the openings, especially with the exhibiting artists. Anaba-recommended Sample Questions: "who are you wearing?", or "where is your mother?".

Nice Jonathan Lasker visit... starts at the opening (Nozkowski sighting) and comes back the next day.

THANKS, James Kalm!

RELATED-ish BLASTS FROM anaba PASTS:

With Liz-N-Val!!! Read about the LOVE. Check out their Artists Space page, check out their website... like that cloud/space show.

Ion Birch VS. Ellen Berkenblit!!
all the previously posted thumbs-ups!

The Jerry Saltz Studio Visit Report.... A CLASSIC anaba MUST-READ!!!

PS - The free sofa across the street has been taken, and replaced by a $10 tv. It gets wrapped in plastic for the night. That tv is kind of like the tv I made in the James piece... mine was copied from a paused X-Files scene.

PPS - old news... here is something that the Albright-Knox doesn't have, but I do... a thumbs-up from Carl Dennis (standing in front of the unfinished James Won't Get Out of Bed).

Albright, PLEASE BUY IT!! I will throw in James for free, and share all the yet untold secrets of James!!
