drive-in

Hathaway's Drive-In, North Hoosick NY...

...this is where I saw Star Wars thirty-plus years ago.

PLUS: posted some video on youtube - inside the car with better sound, outside the car with better color. we used to have to put the speakers on the car windows, but now those are mostly gone and you can tune in on your car radio... that's about the only thing that has changed.

Jenny Holzer Auction BARGAIN

Jenny Holzer's chair went for $5,000 at the Hoosick Rocks auction...

Jenny Holzer
BARGAIN! Somebody got a treasure. I don't think it was part of an edition.

UPDATE: another person at the auction says it went for $6,100.
UPDATE: someone else says it was sold to someone who works for Jenny, in which case it may have been a way for her to help bring attention to the auction, contribute, and still be able to keep the piece.

Jenny's show at Mass Moca opens November 18th. CultureGrrl has info on the Mass Moca benefit auction and party next week in NYC.

They're still working on the site, not all of the rockers are pictured yet, and I'm not sure exactly when the auction is. I want the Jenny Holzer... the sky is the limit.

The back says For Grandma Moses.

It says Action Causes More Trouble Than Thought across the top of the front.

For Rent Fo Rent...

I'm excited about this auction... it's in October. All the money goes to cystic fibrosis and to help maintain an old house. There is a massive beech tree in front of that house, it's gorgeous.

Here is my Hoosick Rocks flickr set. Thomas Moses has one, but I haven't seen it yet.

grave marker!!!

I ate a turkey sandwich in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Next I went back to Mass Moca to see The Believers again... and Erik van Lieshout. Mass Moca is great... the ride was so nice today, the air smelled so fresh and green.

I lucked out because Spencer Finch is installing his big upcoming show and I got to meet him...

surfing the hoosick??
Surfing the Hoosick??? This was a surprise on the way back... they found a little hole to play in.

Hoosick Falls White-Hot Market Report

My village is for sale!! When I was in NYC last month I talked to a FAMOUS GALLERIST who told me that s/he is thinking of buying property in the country... hey, how about in or around Hoosick Falls???

We have many nice houses available... and some landmark buildings that have hit the skids. Some of these would make great live/work studio buildings.

I was just there a couple weeks ago, taking care of Paco. C'mon, let me show you around!

This is called The American House... it used to be wrapped in porches on all three floors. We used to come here and eat pizza and play pool. My grandfather was in a club called the Derby Club, which met in the bar.

You can have it for $99,000! WOW!

That brick building on the far left used to be a small market called O'Dells, ran by Mary Jane O'Dell and her mother. We would go there for the penny candy. I think Mary Jane is still around, but I haven't seen her since the last time I went to the Kiwanis Chicken Barbecue (at the church where the real Natty Bumpo is buried).

This is St. Mary's Academy, where we went to school. My parents and three of my four grandparents also went to school here. I actually remember being in school here and thinking that these would make nice apartments someday.

Now you can! $349,000! It's been empty for years, totally dickerable!

BONUS: View from St. Mary's! You can see a bit of the protest house on the left. Unfortunately, the protest house has now been mostly painted over, and is no longer a protest house to the whole town, just to the neighbors on one side.

I heard my first dirty joke down on that corner, by the stop sign, about a lady looking for her dog, named Titswiggle. Have you seen my Titswiggle?

Officer Royal Howard used to stand in that street so we could cross.

This place has no special memory, but it is BIG and for sale, for only $150,000! Check it out. Yes, that is the top of the American House in the background (the back view).

Okay.. you can have BOTH of these houses and that lot to the left for only $75,000! Junky but cheap. In the background you can see the St. Mary's church.

Here's a nice building for only $189,000. That is Don's Barber Shop next door... I showed this place before (remember my WARNING) .

This is almost directly across the street from the window where Grandma Moses' paintings were first discovered! We actually ended up living in one of the apartments above that store for a short time. Here is one of Grandma Moses' pictures of Hoosick Falls....

Have you seen my Grandma Moses screenplay idea???

Confession: I have a painting in the window (of the next-door store)!!! Mine is in the center, back.... here is a better image. This just might be my ticket to the big time!!!

Thomas Moses, great-grandson of Grandma, also has stuff there.

Every kid in Hoosick Falls learns to swim and ice-skate, cute library, nice public tennis courts, nice athletic fields, Youth Center with basketball courts, band concerts in the park every Wednesday night all summer long since the beginning of time conducted by Mr. Gaillard.

- This one I know for a fact is in great shape, for a really good price. He is my sister-in-law's step-brother.

Nice big cheap houses, beautiful place, proximity to Bennington VT, Williamstown MA, North Adams MA, Albany NY, Saratoga Springs NY; also not too far from NYC, Boston, and Montreal.
Artists! Consider a move to Hoosick Falls!

seen today...

Went to Mass Moca again today, to see The Believers. It's (generally) an excellent show... and I was there for an hour and a half but definitely not long enough to really immerse myself, so I need to go back. I thought that show would be all I needed to see, but they've also opened an Erik Van Lieshout exhibition since my last visit... I had a brief look at that, but will have to return as it also looks very good (mostly videos).

One Thing: I hadn't quite realized, until today, exactly how much Jonathan Meese, Erik Van Lieshout, and myself have in common. Waaay waay too much. I can't even get into it.

That I didn't have enough time to spend with even one of those two shows should give you an idea of how BIG that place is... and there is much more to see. Two shows I've already seen were still there - Ahistoric Occasion was in the process of being de-installed, the Adam Cvijanovic/Peter Garfield show is still up - and the MAIN SPACE remains closed because of an artist that seriously sounds like a huge prick; and I almost always side with the artist. Here are some of his demands since abandoning the project.

At an antique store I saw this nice little painting and that it's a Clyde du Vernet Hunt, which was a real surprise... and they didn't know he was the guy who did the Abraham Lincoln outside of the Bennington Museum. Um, I think it was underpriced. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything.
RELATED: Okay, maybe this isn't a Redon... pretty doubtful... but I still like it (three hundred bucks, at different store).
turkey
I saw a HUGE turkey, standing all alone in a field. His feathers were completely fanned out, but in this picture a little less. Seriously, this was one big yummy bird.
baby sheep
Saw a lot of baby sheep in Hoosick.

Hoosick Falls visit

DSCN0502
Here is a picture of the Hoosick Falls protest house I blogged about last month. They've painted over the side that is most visible to the town, and the front porch area. Why? Sorry I never got a photo.

The side that faces the neighbor's house is still good.
DSCN0501

Below is Don's Barber Shop, which I visited to get a photo of his clock - made by Dee Shaw. The bottom half is a picture of John Street, with Don's shop in the middle, on the left. Don was the mayor of Hoosick Falls for about thirty years. Dee burns local scenes onto pieces of wood, sometimes adding color. I have four or five.

DSCN0499

Here is a picture of Don cutting Mr. Eberle's hair. He is holding a fake winning scratch-off lottery ticket, HAR HAR! Don was the Mayor of Hoosick Falls for (about) thirty years.
DSCN0495
WARNING: Don't get your hair cut here.

DSCN0503
Look at this wild car, the back seat is crammed full of stuff. Can you see the little sign in the back window? What's going on? Is the car for sale?

No. It is only Pampers for sale. Click here for a bigger picture, and to be able to read the list of other products available. I think my mom bought a sofa and chairs from this guy.

DSCN0504

Across the street from Don's, Mrs. Loretan has opened a small gallery. Below is a photo of one of the two Thomas Moses paintings she has in her window. The next building up is the storefront that first displayed the paintings of Grandma Moses, Thomas Moses' great-grandmother.

DSCN0490
Thomas Moses is good! I'm going to post some more photos later.
