qualities of a good scholar's rock - grotesque, corruscated, pockmarked, elaborated, over-elaborated, animated, awkward, top heavy, wrinkling (texture), moistness (tactile and glossy), resonance.

Walter McConnell

Walter McConnell, Itinerant Edens: Chinoiserie, moist clay, wood, plastic, polysterene, utility lamp, 2003/2007

Walter McConnell's misty Shangri-La of moist clay encased in plastic is one of my favorite pieces in MASS MoCA's Eastern Standard: Western Artists in China.

The statement -

"McConnell's moist clay sculpture reflects China's rich artistic history as well as a fantasy image of the East. Inspired in part by his tours of classic scholar's gardens, the work investigates the way images evolve as they are translated across cultures. This imaginary landscape is taken directly from an 18th-century wallpaper pattern book created by French painter and designer Jean Baptiste Pillement. The condensation produced from the 3,000 pounds of wet clay gives the work an apparitional quality, manifesting the veil through which visitors often view a foreign place. Reminiscent of a snow globe, the work takes on a kitsch quality, referencing - on a large scale - trinkets sold to tourists, and an image of China consumed by locals and foreigners alike"

MASS MoCA now allows photography, and has started a flickr pool and a youtube site. Here is the video of Walter McConnell constructing his piece; it's less than a minute and twenty seconds... worth it!

Art Basel: Stuffy's Photos!!! PLUS... where are they now???

Douglas Witmer sent me his Art Basel: Stuffy's photos! LOOK, this is it! The pieces on that first wall are me, Michael Lease, 3 by Drew Liverman, and Rachel Hayes. Check out all the booths!

I saw today that Drew has an EIGHT-PAGE spread in the current issue of Beautiful Decay! wow. PLUS, Rachel has a review in NYArts Magazine.

Oura Sananikone, Bruce Wilhelm, Travis Conner, Timothy Sean Johnston, Don Crow, Scott Eastwood.

Bruce has got a lot going on.... Don is back in Richmond for the summer.... Scott is where? Last thing I know is Scott made Boozefox with Drew and Jules, in Austin... and it LOOKS AMAZING... Travis is probably in a boxcar somewhere?

nice big sculpture

This is in someone's front yard, in Salem, NY... it's big, almost two stories... I don't know who the artist is. There is another big one close by, plus snow piles that may be hiding more buried sculpture.
I like the silver and twisty riveted metal, like Jamgochian's building. This would look great next to that building.

This is the front side seen from the street, it's like a giant scholar's rock. Maybe I will come back when the snow melts and set up a little table and THINK about things...

Richmond Scholar's Rock and Opportunities to Consider

Richmond Scholar's Rock
I found this scholar's rock on last week's Christmas walk. Richard Rosenblum has an excellent collection of scholar's rocks, but his are all Chinese. Mine is AMERICAN!

Anyways, here are some opportunities to consider. I haven't been applying for much of anything since starting this blog, I think the blog is meeting many of those needs, but will probably try for a few of the following (listed by application deadline) -

1/15, Abbey Awards - an extended residency at the British School at Rome. This would be GREAT. I've never even been to Europe. ($45).

1/16, Roswell - an extended residency in New Mexico. A completely different experience from what Rome would be, but equally GREAT. ($25).

Current VCU grads Eric Sall and Rachel Hayes did this together (they're married), recent grad Theresa Pfarr is there now.

1/31, Bethesda Painting Awards - I regret not applying for this last year, so I will definitely apply this year. Only open to painters in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. ($25).

Ron Johnson is one of the jurors! Hmm, that could go either way.

from Fast Times at Ridgemont High

1/31, Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio Program - nice, big, free studio space for a year in NYC. NO ENTRY FEE!!

2/1, Provincetown FAWC - I've wanted to do this for a long time. ($35).

What else?

little people

little people, originally uploaded by Bromirski.

Finally! I've scanned the slide that has the little people! The top cave is about three inches around and the bottom cave is 2"x3". The people are made of mostly cut paper, I had to use tweezers and a magnifying glass - those pink cheeks are TINY. The three baskets are really woven - I made a very tiny tiny weave and cut out the basket shapes. Here is a much better even more zoomed-in look.

Those guys are the shinto spirits of the scholar's rock. They're everywhere! The whole painting is here. Thumbs-up from William Bailey! Thumbs-up from Pat Adams!
