It is kinda weird, for someone who is rarely in NYC and is always hearing about how HOT the art market is, with artists supposedly under pressure to produce new work for fairs, to come across so much stuff I have seen in NYC shows re-represented in people's shots from Miami. What are the chances that work from the few shows I have seen in Chelsea are the ones that just happen to get photographed and put on the internet by people visiting ABMB? Makes me think that if I were a (more) frequent visitor of the galleries and had gone to Florida I would've seen A LOT of familiar stuff.

PLUS, so much of it got good press in New York. I don't know much of anything about the art market, and am not a participant, but if good stuff that is getting good reviews in the NYTimes is not selling... how "hot" can the market be?

Albert Oehlen in Concrete Works, at Mitchell-Innes & Nash - priced at $425,000, it good a good mention in the NYTimes review of the show.

Michael Zahn, in Late Liberties, at John Connelly - positive mention in the Bridget Goodbody NYTimes review of the show.

This show (and Zahn) got A LOT of mostly positive press; Time Out New York, Gay City News, New York Sun, Bloomberg, James Wagner, more. Actually, I wasn't too into this show, except for the Wendy White and Carrie Moyer.

Sarah Peters, at Winkleman - this was a good show, good prices, and she got a very good review in the NYTimes, by Roberta Smith (scroll down)! What the hell, why is there so much of it in Miami? I don't get it.

HOT Market + GOOD Work + EXCELLENT Review + by ROBERTA Smith! = SHOULD Equal they are all GONE, right? Something does not compute... input dekimasen... system overload... CRASH.

There is more, I just wanted to hit the NYTimes ones. Maybe it's because they were summer shows? OR/and is the market hype a big bluff, and it's over? OR/and are NYtimes reviews no reflection on sales? It looks like the Overstock.com warehouse.

Art Basel Miami Beach: adrift

ABMB: the containers, PLUS

Okay, this will be my second to final Art Basel Miami Beach post. I'm very glad I went and saw SO MUCH ART.

At the containers on the beach I especially enjoyed seeing Alexandre Da Cunha and William Daniels at Vilma Gold, Torsten Slama at Galeria Vera Gliem, and Ian Burns at Spencer Brownstone.

Alexandre Da Cunha had two small paintings made from re-worked antique thrift store paintings. The one I am remembering was almost a monochrome, kind of a dark red painted over the original painting, except for a single thin strip of flaking earth-sky tones with a faraway bird. The whole canvas has been loosened from it's stretchers and is drooping over.

William Daniels small painting looks like a collage of torn paper but is in fact all painted. It was *wow*.


Torsten Slama -He had a number of works up, they were all super perfect, landscapes and buildings, like with colored pencil or maybe a very fine brush. This is his container, above. Wish I had better notes or better photos.

Ian Burns made the container into a small funhouse with wood and lights and wooden puppet shadows being projected onto paper screens. Like Flintstones television.

Goudzwaard Kees, also at Zeno X Gallery. This was a good gallery - here are some interesting drawings by someone named Van Kerckhoven Annemie. My photos are not good.

Here is a bad photo of a good Naomi Fisher painting at Frederic Snitzer. I like her photography, then she was involved in that fun Gelatin project in NYC at Leo Koenig recently, and now here is a painting! It was very liquidy, much better in person.


I like this one a lot. Oh wait, this is mine. It's in my apartment.


Barkley Hendricks at Projectile. This is called Family Jules, from 1974. Here is another angle of the Hendricks, here is a Hendricks from 2002.

Yuko Murata at Gallery Side 2 - nicely represented with a lot of simple quiet paintings, some with cute points like bats and flying squirrels.

Malcolm Morley at Xavier Hufkens. This is an exciting painting, I love it. Here's a detail.

Norbert Schwentkowski at Contemporary Fine Arts. This reminded me of Hans Heiner Buhr's work. Hey, Hans - I can't find the airplane paintings on your site. Where are they?

Schwentkowski also did this Osama painting, which has a glittery-ish purple sheen in person.
